In the final debate, John McCain came out and said what I had earlier heard him imply: that the American people were innocent victims of Wall Street's greed. This may be an attractive fiction for the electorate, but it is also blatantly false. How can we expect someone to lead who proclaims such a lie? Are we victims when we drive our imported SUV's to big box stores and max out our credit cards on junk consumer goods? Are we innocent victims when we buy huge houses in the middle of nowhere? We are, for now at least, people with choices. We choose what we buy and where we buy it, and we elect people into public office. And we collectively elected W into our highest office in 2000, and actually returned him to that office in 2004. I don't see the innocence.
