While I live inland, I have experienced some major storms including constant winds of 55 miles per hour, tornadoes, straight line winds of 90 mph, and floods. Alabama gets its share of dangerous conditions. Recently hurricanes have caused major league damage to homes and businesses in the gulf coast from Northern Mexico to the Florida Keys. There are widespread devastation in certain areas where the primary winds and flood surge occurred. Almost every time, the tax payers have subsidized insurance company claims or bailouts while failing to pay all legitimate claims. Why does the government allow homes to be rebuilt time and again where hurricanes have destroyed more than once? Would it not cost us less in insurance rates, taxes from government payouts, and rescue costs for residents that refuse to evacuate? Of coarse it would. Personally, I am tired of paying for someone else to live on the beach. How hard would it be to either build hurricane proof homes, or move a few miles inland? If we are ever going to get back to our comfortable way of life we lived in the mid ‘90’s, we are going to have to put our foot down on the abuse of big business. Banks, Insurance companies, oil companies, the Power Company, water, natural gas, and phone services have us by the short hair and we are all at their mercy. To pile it on top, our employers are sending our jobs overseas to save a few extra bucks and line their pockets with bonuses. What can we do as citizens to reduce our risk to these profit mongers? I am interested in knowing what my peers think about this subject. We can’t depend on our elected leaders anymore. They are in bed with the profit mongers to strip us of our money and power. While they shuffle the voting districts and enact laws that give the big business money, we struggle to feed our families and provide a safe and health life for our children. I am tired!
